The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) says the
current West African Examination Council (WAEC) assessment system is
inefficient hence the high level of irregularities reported year after
year.
Addressing a News Conference in Accra on Thursday, Mr Bright Appiah,
the Council Chair, GNECC, challenged WAEC to strengthen its assessment
system to prevent people from taking advantage of it.
“WAEC must strengthen its systems to ensure the dignity of our
children. The recurrence of examination malpractices and subsequent
cancellation of papers is highly unacceptable and it is about time WAEC
and other relevant regulatory bodies put in place measures to address
the problem with utmost urgency,” he said.
Mr Appiah also called on WAEC to prosecute perpetrators found guilty
of such examination malpractices as their actions undermined the
credibility of certificates from the WAEC in Ghana and should not be
countenanced.
He said: “Over the past few months, we have been hit by two major examination scandals.
Three days ago, WEAC has also announced that 1,859 candidates have
their subject results cancelled, and 453 candidates have their entire
results cancelled following the conclusions of investigations of cases
of examination malpractices detected during the conduct of the
examinations and all these irregularities undermine the credibility of
WAEC.”
Mr Appiah also called on the Bureau of National Investigations to
come out with the findings on the massive leakage of the five papers
during the Basic Education Certificate Examination in June 2015.
He also called for a consultative discussion with stakeholders
involving students, parents, WAEC and the Ghana Education Service.
He advised parents to understand that education went beyond passing
examinations and they must, therefore, be interested in the total
development of their wards.
“Parents should not support their children to engage in exam malpractices,” he advised. GNA
