Tragedy struck Tuesday in
Berkeley, California, United States of America during a 21st birthday
party after a fifth floor balcony collapsed killing six people and injuring
seven others. Five of the injured people were Irish students believed to have
been living temporarily in the US as part of a work exchange programme. Authorities
in California confirmed seven others remained in hospital.
The Consul General of
Ireland to the Western United States, Philip Grant disclosed around 700 Irish
students currently live in the San Francisco Bay Area.
“We’re still in an
emergency response mode. It’s a formative experience, and to have this happen…
has left us all frozen in shock and disbelief”, he said.
