A United States university don, Professor Ruth Okediji has called on
Nigerian youths to contribute to the diversification of the economy by
leveraging on opportunities available in the Information Communications
Technology (ICT) sector, to reduce unemployment in the country.
The University of Minnesota law professor gave this charge at a
two-day workshop on Nigerian Copyright and Digital economy organised by
Goggles with support from African Centre for Civil Education (ACCE) and
the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) in Lagos.
Speaking on the importance of ICT, the don disclosed that founders of
Facebook and Microsoft were job creators and urged Nigerian youths to
emulate them instead of engaging in dubious activities on-line.
Professor Okediji described Nigerian youths are smart, intelligent
and hardworking and enjoined them to use their brains, phones, Ipad,
tablets and internet facilities to do genuine businesses.
She disclosed that young people across the globe are the ones driving
the digital economy to grow and called on Nigerian youths to up their
games in the sector. Okediji called for less dependence on the oil and
gas sector, and attention to be focused on ICT sector to build the
economy and create new jobs.
According to her, the shift is necessary as the recurring slide in
oil prices across the globe has continued to create distortions in the
domestic economy, adding that unemployment, inflation and others would
reduce to its barest level if the manufacturing sector picks up.
